Comment on the following statement: "Since everything is on the internet, I don't need books....right?"

I don’t agree with this statement because people need to know how to utilize book resources, and realize that books are just as important as internet resources. It's important that people not only do research on the internet but with books because later in their academic career, they are going to have to get a variety of sources which include book sources. If people just use the internet as a resource, they're just limiting themselves from information that might not be on the internet but can be found in a book. I find it helpful to use a book resource than using an internet resource because the author’s information is right there within the book, so there isn’t extra information to look up about the author. Therefore, I can see if the author is a reliable source to get information from. In a book, one could see the information that the author used, which is useful to refer to. Sometime one can't really tell if the information on the website is credible, or the type of sources that the author got it from. If people constantly use internet resources, they won’t know how to use a book to find information. For example, they probably won't know the simple ways to look for information like using the index or table of contents. I find it as helpful to use a book resource as it is to use an internet resource, but I think the uses between them should be balance so one isn’t being used more than the other. That way, one can have experience using both.

  1. I like how you talk about the importance of print resources and the ability to review the credibility of the author or the resources in the book. You a very right, online resources *can* be helpful - there are a lot of great sites with reliable information on them. But if you are not savvy to the ways some sites and search engines work, you may find it difficult to sort through truth or myth. Like you learned in class on Tuesday, it is a very easy way to earn yourself a F on an assignment, even though you work really hard on it! I also would like to mention reading books versus reading off of an e-reader (like a Nook or Kindle). For me, it is most important to hold a book in my hands and turn the pages...I couldn't imagine reading a book any other way!
